Phase 1: The new bridge is mostly complete and open for traffic. . The site is still under construction and a 10 MPH speed limit is in effect. Motorists are asked to use caution driving across the bridge as the loose gravel is not conducive to high speed travel. Removal of the bypass bridge is underway with completion by Dec 31 weather permitting.
Weather continues to be the deciding factor as to what parts of the project can be completed prior to the winter shut down. Completion of the bike path on 1st. St E will continue next spring.
Phase 2a: New Mission View Drive. The main water line installation is underway with homeowner connections to be completed next spring along with the actual connection to Skyline Drive.

TIGER/Skyline Drive Project Weekly Construction Meeting
Oct 25, 2011, 8:30 am, Polson County Courthouse
After a review of last week’s minutes, County Commissioners and representative engineers, contractors and agents discussed the following: The “B” Canal is being replaced with a 36 inch concrete pipe. Curb and gutter installation is continuing with paving to start next week. Top soil is expected to be spread prior to the winter shut down. The Mission View Drive portion of the project will begin early November. Labeled “Phase 2A”, Lowering of sanitary sewer at the top of Skyline Drive and utility re-locations and the roughing in of New Mission View Drive are three steps expected to be completed this year.
A reminder that Skyline Drive will be completely closed to ALL traffic Nov 14th through Dec 4th. The closure will be at Caffrey and Skyline North to Skyline and “A” canal. The unhindered removal of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge necessitates the closure. Residents can check the county website for more details and maps.

Road closed? Detour signs? The Skyline project is officially underway. LS Jenson, Contractor, is finalizing placement of the temporary bridge over the Pablo Feeder Canal this week and is moving to complete a construction detour along 1st Street East between Demer’s Lane and 12th Ave West. Utility relocation has been underway along that segment for several weeks, and over the next several days, the road will be widened between Demer’s and Rung Lane to provide a driving surface to allow 2-way traffic to continue during construction. Drivers are advised to use caution, as there will be times when the road will be further limited to one-way traffic to accommodate construction activities. Traffic lights and/or flagmen will be used accordingly. It is advised that, wherever possible, alternative routes be used.
To facilitate construction, there are road closures to through-traffic on 16th Ave East and 17th Ave West, which will remain throughout construction (through October). Drivers entering from Demer’s Lane (going north); Rung Lane, Skyline Lane or Island View (going north or south) are advised to yield accordingly, wait for construction traffic heading in their intended direction, and follow the line of cars. Currently, there are also detour signs on 12th Street and 2nd Ave West. Such signs will appear throughout the project area directing traffic to follow detour routes. Please observe and follow the detour routes accordingly. The Project Team will try to keep the public informed as to when such detours will be in effect and preferred alternative routes.
Maps showing the construction sequence will be posted on Lake County’s TIGER website, at http://www.lakecounty-mt.org/tiger/. On the site, you can also find a comment and question area that directs communication back to the Project Team. The long awaited start of the Skyline Drive reconstruction project has arrived. The construction contractor, L.S. Jenson Construction & Ready Mix of Missoula, will begin to move equipment onto the site the week of July 18, with construction on Phase 1beginning in earnest the following week and continuing through October.
Phase 1 includes roadway and utility improvements consisting of reconstruction of First Street East (between 14th Avenue and DeMers) to include pavements; relocation of existing water and sanitary sewer mains, extension of existing storm drains, and drainage improvements within the construction area.
The project also includes installation of a temporary bridge over the Pablo Feeder Canal on Skyline Drive north of Caffrey Road to accommodate construction vehicles needing to access the construction site. The city of Polson is taking this opportunity to upgrade several water and sewer service lines in the project area and improvement of storm water drainage is expected to be a major outcome of the project.
The main construction “camp” will be just north of the Hospital at 12th Street and 1st Avenue. There will be several road closures and traffic re-routed from time-to time. A full map of the recommended routes will appear in next week’s paper, along with a schedule of some of the major activities.
The TIGER management team will provide weekly updates via local papers, the radio and the website at http://www.lakecounty-mt.org/tiger/.
Phase 2 of the project, which is the total reconstruction of Skyline Drive from 1st Ave East to Caffrey Road, including a bike and pedestrian pathway, will be built in 2012 with construction expected to start in the spring.
The Skyline Reconstruction Project has been funded through a $12 million grant to Lake County from the U.S. Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration under the “Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery” discretionary grants program. Representatives to the Management Team include Lake County (Paddy Trusler, Project Manager); Lake County Community Development (Billie Lee, Project/Grant Administrator); City of Polson (Todd Crossett, City Manager); and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (Jami Hamel, Project Liaison).
