Legislation
More than 1,400 Montanans die each year from tobacco related
illness and more than 2100 Montana teenagers will start smoking each year.
Tobacco companies spend annually $35.6 million marketing their deadly
products to Montanans. Prevention through legislation is vital to keeping
youth from starting and saving Montana millions in health care dollars.
Proven solutions include:
Increase tobacco taxes. An increased tax significantly reduces tobacco use
among our teens and causes many adults to quit smoking. As of January 1,
Montanans voted to increase the state tax on tobacco to:
$1 on cigarettes per pack
50 cents on spit tobacco
25% of wholesale on all other tobacco products
From a public health perspective we get from higher tobacco prices the
following:
a reduction in the rate at which young people begin using tobacco
reduction in the number of existing tobacco users
lower rates of death and disability
more funds to help prevent and treat tobacco-related illness
Adequately funded statewide community-based tobacco disease prevention
program. In states with fully funded programs smoking rates have been
reduced by more than three times the smoking rate of Montana. Montana voters
are in favor of a fully funded community-based program.
