Underground
Storage Tanks and Hazardous Substance Spills
Underground storage tanks (or UST’s) are defined as tanks for
storing petroleum or other hazardous substances and their connected
piping, containing at least 10% of their combined volume
underground.
There are several million UST’s currently in use nationally.
Federal, state and local legislation has been put in place to
regulate the installation and use of such tanks and protect our
environment from potential hazards.
About half of the U.S. population relies on a groundwater source for
their drinking water. Fuel leaks from service stations are one of
the most common sources of groundwater contamination. In addition,
UST leaks or other hazardous substance spills may cause potentially
harmful or explosive vapors to leak into confined spaces and
residences.

us and our environment from potential hazards.
